Welcome to our website

Henk Bruins and Jacq Raijmann are a married couple who moved to Grancanaria in 2017 to realise a shared dream.

Our dream was:

Leaving the cold Netherlands behind and settling on this beautiful sunny island.
In the Netherlands, Henk was an independent entrepreneur with a painting company.
Jacq worked as a socio-therapeutic worker in addiction care.
To build a life in Gran Canaria, we bought an apartment and a bungalow that we rent out to holidaymakers. We take care of the maintenance of the flats and clean them ourselves. We consider good contact with our guests to be very important and we are therefore keen to offer a good service. In this respect, we often go just that little bit further than the average landlord. All this to make your stay in
Gran Canaria an unforgettable experience.

Once a Tukker…

Opening a café in a warm country was the childhood dream of Henk Bruins (68) from Oldenzaal. Seven years ago, he decided to make that dream come true. Even though things turned out slightly differently…

Where did the desire to move to Gran Canaria come from?

Years ago, I went on holiday to Gran Canaria with friends. I was hooked from the very first moment. It felt as if I had been to the island before. It immediately felt like home. I knew I would return one day. And that’s exactly what happened. I met my husband Jacq and suggested we spend our first holiday together on the Spanish island. To my delight, we both experienced the same feeling of happiness. That’s when the ball started rolling. The first step was to buy an apartment for ourselves. We soon came up with the idea of renting it out during the months we weren’t there. So for a while, we had one foot in Twente and the other in Gran Canaria. When did you decide to go all in? “We really enjoyed island life and renting out our flat was going well. Soon, the idea of emigrating came up. To really earn some extra cash, we bought two more flats to rent out. Then we started preparing for the move.”

How was the transition from the Netherlands to Gran Canaria?

This was a difficult decision for Jacq. In the Netherlands, I was self-employed with my own painting business. That was already a closed chapter for me. I wanted to get more out of life, so saying goodbye was easy. Jacq couldn’t leave his job as a socio-therapeutic worker at Tactus behind so easily. That’s why we return to the Netherlands every year.Gran Canaria is mainly a winter destination, so we spend a few months in Twente during the summer. Jacq then resumes his work at Tactus. I can’t sit still either, so I go to work at an aluminium factory. This way, we have the ideal balance: we live mainly in Gran Canaria and spend a few months in the Netherlands. I can say that my dream has come true, albeit without a pub.”

What is great about Gran Canaria?

Everything! We live in an ideal spot in Maspalomas, right in the middle of the tourist area. People here are always cheerful because they are on holiday. There is sunshine, lovely temperatures and the beach is nearby. It is also a great place for us to live as a gay couple. It is a very liberal island where everyone is accepted.

Article from Dagblad Tubantia newspaper dated 4 January 2025

Twice a year, they celebrate Pride here and there are many gay bars. What’s special is that there is also a mosque nearby. Everything can coexist here, which is wonderful to see.

Do you ever miss Twente?

Certainly. Even though we return every year, we do miss it, especially all the greenery.
When you cycle from Oldenzaal to Enschede, your heart opens up to the beautiful nature.
Here, everything that doesn’t get water turns brown.

Applies to you: once a Tukker, always a Tukker?

Absolutely! I will always remain connected to Twente. Some people emigrate and never come back. I couldn’t imagine doing that. I lived there for sixty years, so Twente is and always will
be a part of me. Yoni Moldovan
